Kapil Dev throws weight behind Gambhir after BGT loss

Kapil Dev, the World Cup-winning captain, evaluated Gautam Gambhir’s performance thus far as the Indian team’s head coach. The Men in Blue lost two Test series against Australia (away) and New Zealand (home) under the previous India openers coach, as well as an ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Experts have begun to doubt Gambhir’s position in the team after India lost the prized Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia in a five-match Test series by a score of 1-3. However, Kapil has defended the Delhi native, stating that the players and captain must ultimately win games for the team and that coaches do not on the field. The former all-round player expressed his support for Gambhir and his optimism that, with his leadership, the team would improve.

“There are huge expectations. The team and the captain are on the pitch, but the coaches are not. A new coach will present his own views in the hopes that they will benefit the nation. People will raise their fingers if he isn’t’, Kapil told Gulf News through Hindustan Times.

“Gambhir has a little bit of a temperament. He is not like Rahul Dravid or Ravi Shastri. Let’s hope he will perform better for the nation because every coach has a different style of thinking,” he continued.

Regarding Rohit and Kohli, Kapil Dev said, “They are very big players.”

In addition to Gambhir, veteran batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have also drawn criticism after finishing the Australian tour with pitiful averages of 23.75 and 6.20, respectively. But according to Kapil, the two cricket players would recognise when it’s time to stop playing.

“They’re major players. We can only hope that they will cancel if they feel it is not the right moment to play, as reported by Kapil on News18.
