Kanpur's Green Park Stadium outfield earns demerit point with 'unsatisfactory' rating

India and Bangladesh played the second Test of the series in Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium from September 27 to October 1, although the ICC (International Cricket Council) has rated the venue as “unsatisfactory.” The venue has one demerit point added to the ranking.

Due to the soggy outfield on days two and three, play was not feasible, and on day one of the second Test, only 35 overs of play were permitted. Additionally, the public works department had declared one of the stands unsafe before to the game, even directing the authorities to only provide a small number of upper-level seats for the fans.

Even though Team India missed a few days of play at the Green Park Stadium, they did not appear to be impacted by the loss of playing time. By capturing 20 Bangladeshi wickets in 121.2 overs and batting aggressively, Rohit Sharma‘s team was able to narrowly win.

With a well-defined strategy, India came out to bat after limiting Bangladesh to 233 runs in the first innings. Following an outstanding batting display, India declared victory after scoring 285 runs in the first innings before dismissing Bangladesh for a mere 146 runs. This left them with a target of 95 runs to pursue in the second innings. India won the match by seven wickets in the end.

But there is some positive news for the venue: the game’s pitch was rated as “satisfactory.” The ICC rates all of the pitches and outfields on a very good to unsuitable scale, which is an intriguing observation. The four ratings that the scale uses are very good, satisfactory, unsatisfactory, and unsuited.

Venues with an unsatisfactory rating receive one demerit point, while those with an unfit rating receive three. In addition, venues that acquire five or more demerit points in a five-year period are prohibited from hosting any international games for a year.
