Diogo Jota, a 28-year-old football player for Liverpool and Portugal, and his brother tragically died in a car accident in northwest Spain on Thursday, July 3. The loss of one of Portugal’s most gifted football players is being lamented throughout the sports world.
According to officials, the Lamborghini they were riding in swerved off the road and caught fire. According to a statement from Spanish police, there is evidence at the tragic scene that Jota’s car ruptured a tyre when she was overtaking.
In June, Jota married his partner, Rute Cardoso, whom he had dated for ten years. The couple also had three kids. In 2020, Liverpool Football Club signed Jota. In 182 games, the centre striker netted 65 goals for the Reds. With victories in the 2024–25 Premier League and the just finished UEFA Nations League, he had been enjoying his professional career. Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, who played football for Penafiel in the Portuguese second level, was also killed in the vehicle accident.
The sports community has been overcome with sadness ever since the news of their premature death broke. Social media has been inundated with tributes to the departed souls and sorrow for the Jota family from athletes and fans.
Yuvraj Singh, a former all-rounder for India and a fervent football supporter, posted on his official ‘X’ handle to commend Jota’s football skills and show support for his loved ones at this trying time.
