Josh Hazlewood on Australia's strategy for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy: "More focused on new players"

Australian speed spearhead Josh Hazlewood revealed a tactical change in the team’s strategy as all eyes are on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25. The bowler said that Australia is focussing more on India’s young players than their more experienced players.

For both teams, the next five-match Test series—which starts in Perth on November 22—will be crucial in terms of the World Test Championship standings. After back-to-back home series defeats to India in 2018–19 and 2020–21, Australia will spare no detail in their preparation. This time, Shubman Gill and young Yashasvi Jaiswal are the targets of their attention.

“It’s likely that the approach is centred more around the younger players, such Shubman Gill and Jaiswal, against whom we haven’t played much Test cricket. We know what to do because we’ve played against players like Virat, Rohit, and others for years. In a Star Sports exclusive interview, Hazlewood stated, “The plan doesn’t change that often.”

It’s about the basics, doing them well and for a long time: Josh Hazlewood

It is not their inexperience that makes the Australian pacer concentrate on younger players. In six Test matches against Australia, for example, Gill has already amassed an outstanding average of 44.40 along with a century and two half-centuries. In Test cricket, Jaiswal, on the other hand, has not yet encountered the Australian onslaught.

It’s important to do the fundamentals correctly and consistently throughout time. Test cricket typically returns to that Plan A nine times out of ten. The majority of the time, it’s about carrying out that strategy, he continued. You adjust to the circumstances and make changes throughout the day or innings

Before leaving for Australia, India will play a three-match Test series against New Zealand in addition to the two-match Test series they are currently playing at home against Bangladesh. But the Australians are currently in England on a white-ball tour, and they will next play a white-ball series against Pakistan.
