All-format coaches or specialists? Jos Buttler provides his thoughts on the debate

All-format coaches or specialists? Jos Buttler provides his thoughts on the debate

After McCullum’s appointment, supporters have disagreed on whether it is best to designate experts to the white-ball and red-ball teams or hire an all-format coach. Jos Buttler, the captain of England’s white-ball team, has offered his opinion on this discussion. The colorful wicketkeeper-batter claimed that England needed to choose separate coaches for the white-ball and red-ball sides.

In July, England’s white-ball head coach Matthew Mott resigned, and Brendon McCullum took over as squad manager for all three formats. It will be interesting to watch how the former New Zealand captain aids the Three Lions in the white-ball forms, having done a fantastic job leading the Test team.

Notably, he identified the team’s hectic schedule as the primary cause. Although the British have returned to using an all-format coach, Jos Buttler believes that schedules should be well thought out to prevent overstress. Additionally, he suggested that McCullum be given breaks from specific series in order to control his workload.

Both have advantages and disadvantages. Of course, having that same individual across formats allows for consistent messaging. When Brendon and Matthew Mott took over as Test coaches, English cricket had a very full calendar. It didn’t seem conceivable for one man to handle everything. We needed to counterbalance that. Obviously, the one head coach is back in place now, but schedule management will need to be done carefully. Sometimes ‘Baz’ has to take a break for a series, and one of the assistant coaches can step in,” Buttler stated in a Times of India exclusive interview.

Jos Buttler was also questioned on whether, with so many members of the coaching staff providing support, the position of a captain will become less important in the future, particularly in the game’s shortest format. The 34-year-old stated that since the captain was the one making the decisions out on the pitch, he will always have a significant role to play.

“I don’t see the role of captains diminishing in the future at all. Even with the additional data, it’s still critical to make such decisions in the field. Since the game is so brief, every run is crucial, and a few well-placed saves can make all the difference in a game. As captain, you have to make those decisions. Buttler answered, “There’s just extra information for the captain if you need it.
