Jos Buttler on the lessons learned from the ODI WC 2023 debacle: "My biggest takeaway is to try not to confuse freedom with maybe a lack of clarity."

Jos Buttler’s team had to bitterly endure England’s dismal performance at the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The Three Lions, who were one of the tournament favorites and the defending winners going into it, unexpectedly won just three of their nine games to go out early.

Buttler, meanwhile, is still upbeat that his squad will learn from the loss and use it as motivation to win the T20 World Cup in June of this year.

After their group-stage loss to Ireland, the 33-year-old turned things around and guided his team to glory at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. However, their toughness was lacking at the 50-over ICC event, as they were eliminated before the knockout rounds by crushing losses to Afghanistan, South Africa, and New Zealand.

Adversity must be overcome with grace, says Jos Buttler

After contemplating the setback, the England captain admitted that perhaps the leadership group’s occasional ambiguity contributed to England’s difficulties. He is adamant that the team didn’t play to its full potential, though.

“My main takeaway from this experience is to try not to mistake freedom for unclear circumstances. It can be difficult to avoid interfering too much when you’re attempting to give players room to play freely. But you have to be careful not to miss anything,” he stated, according to ESPNcricinfo.

“Perhaps there should have been greater communication at certain points to ensure everyone understood what was expected of them. However, there have been occasions when I’ve looked back and realized that, for whatever reason, the choices I would have made in particular situations would not have worked out

With a team that includes both seasoned players like him and up-and-coming talent like Will Jacks, Harry Brook, and Phil Salt, the wicketkeeper-batter is optimistic about his team’s prospects.

“Our mixed squad is pretty good. We have a lot of experience, but there are also certain individuals, like Harry Brook, who is still very early in his international career, and Will Jacks and Phil Salt, who are really starting to get better. He went on, “Those people are moving our squad ahead and in the right direction.

Buttler believes that England will move on, even though the 2023 ODI World Cup will be painful for a while. His confidence in their ability to defend the T20 World Cup title on American and West Indian territory starting in June does not waver.

“I don’t believe it’s about attempting to create something from scratch or trying to convey ideas to people in ways they haven’t heard before. It’s about being an excellent cricket player. Playing well in crucial moments is essential in tournament cricket. Adversity must be overcome with grace. You need to play smart, understand the rules of the game, and have flexibility,” he said.
