On Monday (April 7), the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) named Harry Brook as the new captain for both ODIs and T20Is, replacing Jos Buttler. The youthful England star, who last captained the side in a five-match ODI series against Australia in 2024, will face a significant assignment.
After the English team’s dismal performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where they lost all of their group stage matches, things took a bad turn. After losing the Champions Trophy, Buttler also resigned as the white-ball format leader as a result of this. In his five appearances as England’s captain, Harry Brook has won two games and lost three. In addition, he captained the England U19 squad throughout the 2018 World Cup. Following the English board’s confirmation of their decision, the star hitter shared his thoughts on being given the opportunity to lead the team.
Being selected England’s white-ball captain is a true honour. I’ve wanted to play for England, represent Yorkshire, and possibly captain the squad since I was a young boy playing cricket in Burley, Wharfedale. It means a lot to me to be given that opportunity today,” Cricbuzz cited Brook as saying.
“I want to express my gratitude to my coaches and family for their unwavering support. Their confidence in me has been crucial, and without them, I wouldn’t be where I am now. This nation is full of talent, and I’m excited to get started, lead us, and strive for victories in key tournaments, series, and the World Cup. “I can’t wait to start and give it my all,” the 26-year-old hitter continued.

The white-ball record of Harry Brook
Although Brook has a respectable ODI and T20I record, it still falls short of the skill and class he has displayed as a player. Brook is unquestionably one of the best batsmen in the Test format at the moment. Brook has participated in 44 T20Is and 26 ODIs thus far. He has a strike rate of 146.15 in the shorter format and averages 34 in 50-over cricket.
Brook also played for England in the 2022 T20 World Cup, which they won. To establish himself as a competent performer in white-ball cricket, the top-order hitter will need to improve his record in both formats.
