Jonathan Trott, the head coach of Afghanistan, recently vented his annoyance at the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for their lack of communication and meddling in team selection. After Afghanistan lost to Zimbabwe by an innings and 73 runs in the one-off Test match in Harare, he made these remarks.
Jonathan Trott, who has played for Afghanistan in some of their most successful eras, such as their triumphant 2023 ODI and 2024 T20 World Cup campaigns, disclosed that he has been eliminated from the selection process entirely in recent months. Despite several attempts, the coach said he has not communicated with selectors or senior board officials.
The fact that I haven’t been able to contribute to the squad is what saddens me, though. I have not communicated with either the chief selector or the ACB’s top management. I’ve spent the last few weeks attempting to contact them. I’ve been attempting to contact the chairman, but, since the Asia Cup didn’t go our way, I haven’t been able to obtain any feedback on the selection, either for this squad or the previous ones. He was quoted on the Sportscast website from Zimbabwe as saying, “There hasn’t been any communication at all.”
It’s very depressing to not have that input: Jonathan Trott
Due to his inability to coordinate, Jonathan Trott disclosed that he was not included in the playing XI for the Zimbabwe Test and was not given any influence over it.
“That’s one of those areas where I believe a coach should have some involvement or an idea. the playing XI, which was again not the case for this game. It’s rather depressing when you don’t have that influence, as I have in other teams and competitions,” Jonathan Trott continued.
If the communication problems persisted, the veteran acknowledged when asked if he was thinking about leaving his position, he would be forced to do so following the 2026 T20 World Cup in India.
“For the upcoming events, especially the T20 World Cup, we need him to be fresh, so I can understand it. It allows younger players to have opportunities. Regretfully, they were unable to accomplish it in this game. “Hopefully, they’ve learned from the experience and will return as better players when given the chance again,” he said in closing.
