With a view towards qualifying for the T20 World Cup in 2026, John Davison was named Italy's T20I coach

Italy’s men’s T20I team has hired former Canada captain John Davison as their head coach in an attempt to secure a spot in the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka.

Two teams will advance to the ICC tournament from Italy’s participation in the European Regional Finals of the T20 World Cup qualifying leg in the Netherlands in June. Scotland, Guernsey, Jersey, and the home team, the Netherlands, are among the formidable opponents they will face.

“Being named head coach of the Italian T20 men’s program excites and honours me. Knowing the players and individuals involved made it easier for me to be persuaded. According to ESPNcricinfo, John Davison expressed his excitement, saying, “As a player for Canada, I have known the excitement of qualifying for World Cups, and I look forward to repeating that thrill with a diverse and dedicated group of players and staff representing Italy.”

John Davison is most remembered for his 2003 World Cup hammering of 111 off 76 balls against the West Indies at Centurion.

Since his retirement, he has developed a coaching career with a focus on spin-bowling, working with Australia and mentoring elite spinners such as Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Swepson, and Matt Kuhnemann.

Joe Burns, a former Queensland and Australia opener who has played for Italy since May 2024 due to his maternal ancestry, will be Davison’s new captain. He said he was proud to be the team’s leader.

“This is a return to my family’s heritage for me. I’m thrilled to be able to help Italian cricket reach its full potential. Burns stated, “My teammates and I are striving to accomplish lofty objectives and make our supporters proud.”

Ben and Harry Manenti are two seasoned players on Italy’s team, while Tim Ward and Jake Doran of Tasmania are awaiting eligibility confirmation. Italy’s pursuit of a historic World Cup berth is strengthened by the inclusion of former Victoria quick Matthew Fotia and former Australia U-19 pacer Jason Ralston in the qualifiers.
