The wager concerned Jofra Archer’s Test future and was placed during the 2022 Ashes day-night Test in Hobart. Archer would never play another Test match, Agnew assured Stokes. But in the Lord’s Test match against India, the 30-year-old pacer showed him wrong with a powerful comeback, taking two wickets in the first innings and three in the second, and helping England win by a slim margin of 22 runs.
After England’s exciting 22-run victory over India in the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Lord’s on Monday, July 14, former cricketer and well-known broadcaster Jonathan Philip Agnew, affectionately known as Aggers, lost a three-and-a-half-year-old wager to England captain Ben Stokes. During the toss interview on Day 1, Aggers gave Stokes his famous hat as part of the lost wager.
In a hilarious turn of events, Jofra Archer wore the hat and interviewed Agnew after the game on Day 5, which swiftly became a comical highlight for cricket fans worldwide.

Speaking of the match, Joe Root’s outstanding century (104), which guided England to 387 in their opening innings, was noteworthy. India’s star player, Jasprit Bumrah, took five wickets. India responded with a calm century from KL Rahul, matching England’s total of 387. Washington Sundar took four wickets as England collapsed for 192 in the second innings. Interestingly, the Indian attack bowled seven of England’s batters.
On a difficult Day 5 pitch at Lord’s, India was bowled out for 170. With an undefeated 61 off 181 balls, Ravindra Jadeja persevered in spite of the circumstances, establishing vital lower-order partnerships with Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. But in the end, England’s bowling was too effective.
England now leads the five-match series 2-1 after the victory. Old Trafford in Manchester will host the start of the fourth Test on July 23. India will try to recover and tie the series at two, while England will try to win the entire series.
