Warwickshire defeated Yorkshire at Headingley in the Rothesay County Championship after overcoming a brilliant 90 from England ace Joe Root to set up a target of 185.

Late on day two, visiting new-ball seamer Ethan Bamber added four wickets to his five in the first innings, completing superb tournament stats of 9 for 107, before bowling Yorkshire out for 232 in their second innings.

After that, Warwickshire ended their run chase at 15 runs without losing any wickets in three overs.

The Bears began the day by responding to a first-inning score of 205, going from 161 for six overnight to 253 all out. Beau Webster, an Australian Test all-rounder, scored an incredible 85 off 86 balls on his debut.

He was caught trying to attack against New Zealand fast Ben Sears, who finished with four wickets, although he was the final visitor wicket to go, helping to secure a 48-run win.

In the first innings, Root was removed for one by Ed Barnard, but there was little practical prospect that this would happen again. However, when Warwickshire resumed bowling 35 minutes before lunch, their bowlers chipped away at the wickets.

They created pressure early on. The score was 9 for 1 when Bamber bowled locum opener Dom Bess in the third over.

Additionally, he and his new-ball partner Olly Hannon-Dalby, who is from Halifax, bowled the first of seven consecutive maidens after lunch.

After a mix-up with opener Adam Lyth, who went on to share a third-wicket 71 with Root from 19 for 2, James Wharton was run out at the non-striker’s end early in the afternoon.

Both appear certain, but Lyth’s attempt was cut short by 10 runs when he edged behind off the back foot to Ed Barnard’s seam in the 28th over, leaving the hosts at 90 for 3.

Then, Joe Root and Harry Brook, the top two Test batsmen in the ICC rankings, shared 53 for the fourth wicket, although the latter’s stay was too short for Yorkshire’s taste. Shortly before lunch, when the hosts were 152 for 4 with a 104-run lead, he was bowled out for 20 after playing around a full ball from seamer Michael Booth.

Before George Hill edged Barnard to second slip, wicketkeeper Kai Smith made a brilliant racing catch after Jonny Bairstow top-edged a pull at Bamber behind on six. In the 60th over, Yorkshire were 190 for 7, ahead by 142, when Barnard hit for a third time and Jordan Thompson made a mistake while covering.

In his 100th first-class innings for the county, Joe Root blasted 13 fours in 131 balls while looking dominant at the crease.

One drilled boundary straight of mid-off against Webster stood out as he hit his fifty off sixty-four balls. But when he top-edged a pull to backward point off Bamber, making it 219 for 8, he lost out on a century.

Before Ben Coad was bowled by Booth for 28, Warwickshire had a little window of batting to manoeuvre through before closing. Dan Mousley was the catcher, and Sears quickly followed with the same combination.

Prior to lunch, Webster was outstanding at the bat in the early innings, helping the Bears reach and narrowly over 250.

He combined strength and creativity to go from 32 overnight to complete his fifty off 54 balls, giving his new county a respectable lead and a batting bonus point. He was a big and commanding figure at the crease.

To put the Bears ahead, he muscled costly countrymen seamer Jordan Buckingham, who was also making his Yorkshire debut, through the off-side for three boundaries and scooped Coad for six.

He pulled Sears to midwicket to close the innings after dominating a 74-run stand with keeper Smith for the eighth wicket. Smith made 19 contributions.

Hill and Sears each took two wickets, with Bairstow catching three of them.
