Joe Root made history on Day 2 of the third Test between England and India at Lord’s. Root’s stunning one-handed diving catch at first slip eliminated Karun Nair as he sought his well-deserved fifty. The dismissal ended a 61-run partnership with KL Rahul and marked Root’s 211th Test outfield catch, surpassing Rahul Dravid.
In reply to England’s 387, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early but recovered owing to Nair and Rahul. When England captain Ben Stokes hit Nair’s bat edge, it sailed right towards Root. Stokes squared Nair with an angled delivery. Ball hit bat shoulder and flew low to first slip.
Joe Root, slightly wider than normal, dove left and caught the ball with his wrong hand millimetres above the turf. Nair returned for 40 off 62 when the third umpire confirmed the fingers were under the ball. Joe Root passed Dravid as the highest non-wicketkeeper Test cricket catcher (211) with this catch.
This milestone occurred the day Joe Root scored his 37th Test century.

Lord’s honours board includes Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah became the 14th Indian bowler to join the Lord’s honours board with his first-innings bowling, while Root’s catch and century made headlines. Bumrah was at his best at the home of cricket, finishing with 5/74 in 27 overs after missing the previous Test. Harry Brook, Root, Stokes, Chris Woakes, and Jofra Archer fell to the Indian pacer. India is 80/2 and trailing by 307 runs with Rahul and Shubman Gill at the crease.
