"It feels like no better," said Joe Root upon passing Alastair Cook's century record

In the Lord’s Test match against Sri Lanka, leading batsman Joe Root of England scored his 34th Test century in the second innings. By doing so, he broke Alastair Cook, his former captain,’s record for the most century by an England cricket player in Test cricket history.

Following the day’s action, Root modestly said that his goal as a member of the England team is to score runs. Additionally, he stated that hitting a century is the best feeling in the world, as it was a major factor in his decision to pick up a cricket bat in the first place. He did, however, quickly clarify that his current focus is on winning a Test match, which is what matters to him more than anything else.

England set a massive target of 483 runs for the second Test, which Joe Root smashed 143 runs in the first innings and made 103 in the second.

All I want to do is play. All I want to do is play, try to contribute to the team, and score the runs needed… However, there’s no greater feeling—I mean, it’s evidently incredible when you score 100 and, let’s face it, that’s a large part of the reason you started playing the game and what you enjoy about it—in a video that ECB produced, Root stated.

But winning a Test match is the best feeling in the world. Therefore, the greater it is, the more it may impact games and the more you can, you know, add to the squad. And maybe, with that mindset, there will be more days like this,” he continued.

Speaking of smashing Cook’s record, Root said he will be able to make fun of the former cricket player later on because of how kind and supportive he had been to him during his career.

“I am sure I will be able to rib him a bit later on about it because he is a good friend of mine and he has been very gracious and supportive throughout,” Root remarked.
