"ENG vs IND 2025: Joe Root nears Test milestone shared by Ponting and Kallis"

Joe Root, the former captain of England, has a chance to catch up to cricketing greats Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis in the second Test of the five-match series against India.

With 102 Test scores of fifty or above at the moment, Joe Root is only one run away from matching Kallis and Ponting.

The only player with more fifty-plus scores in the red-ball game is Sachin Tendulkar, who has 119. The 34-year-old would be looking to reach yet another milestone in his illustrious Test career after scoring 28 and 53* in the opening series.

Most test scores of 50 or higher:

Player Matches Innings Runs Average 50+ scores
Sachin Tendulkar 200 329 15,921 53.78 119
Ricky Ponting 168 287 13,378 51.85 103
Jacques Kallis 166 280 13,289 55.37 103
Joe Root 154 281 13087 50.92 102*

England won the first match at Headingley by five wickets, giving them a 1-0 series lead. The hosts put on a professional display, maintaining a firm hold on the game even after surrendering a slim lead. In the end, they had to chase a huge 371 to win.

Ben Duckett’s 62 and 149 earned him the title of Player of the Match. Josh Tongue, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, and Ollie Pope were among noteworthy members of the English unit.

At Edgbaston, the Stokes-led team would like to double their lead. A few days before the second Test started, they made their XI public. The management has expressed faith in the sqaud that played in the opening game.

However, in order to compete with England, India would need to put in a lot of effort to polish a few elements. When facing a strong English team, Shubman Gill and company would like to play much better and compete more effectively.
