Joe Root passes Rohit Sharma in the list of highest hundreds after hitting a Lord's tonne

Michael Vaughan, a former cricketer for England, had predicted that Joe Root will eclipse the record run total of Sachin Tendulkar in Test cricket before Sri Lanka’s trip of England. Even so, Vaughan had given his blessing for the veteran to have a major debut during Three Lions’ subcontinental tour.

In the second Test against the Lankan Lions on August 29, the renowned English batsman scored his 49th international century. Root has so announced the chaos from home. The right-handed batsman amassed 143 runs, taking his career total of Test hundreds to 33.

He holds the second-highest total among active players with 49 tonnes across all formats. In addition, he broke the record of 48 centuries held by India skipper Rohit Sharma. Against Rohit’s 509 innings, Root amassed the desired number in 454 innings. Virat Kohli’s 80 tonnes in 591 innings are still a long way off for him.

Player Country Centuries  Innings
Virat Kohli India 80 591
Joe Root  England  49 454
Rohit Sharma  India 48 509
Kane Williamson New Zealand  45 423
Steve Smith Australia 44 392

Joe Root is getting closer to Tendulkar’s lifetime record for the most Test runs.

When it comes to Test runs, Joe Root, 33, has amassed 12, 274 runs. According to Vaughan’s forecast, he is only 3,647 runs short of tying Tendulkar’s record total. After participating in 200 Test matches and batting for 329 innings, the Master Blaster still holds the record. However, Root has achieved this while batting for 264 runs in 145 Tests.

Joe Root is so exceptional that he has the potential to surpass Sachin Tendulkar in the near future and will emerge as England’s top run scorer in the coming months. They didn’t appear as careless with the bat as they had in the past. Although they are scoring goals rapidly, it doesn’t seem like their egos are taking control. They are simply doing sensibly,” Vaughan had remarked.
