Day 4 of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka in Manchester presented a risky situation. After some impressive batting performances from Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews, Kamindu Mendis struck a century. The trio made it possible for Sri Lanka to score 326 runs in their second innings, leaving England needing to chase more than 200 runs in the Manchester Test’s final innings.
The endeavour was not simple and became more challenging with time. The Ollie Pope-led team was cut down to 70/3, which gave Sri Lanka a chance to win. Joe Root, on the other hand, was unbeatable as he led England to victory by five wickets by boycotting Bazball and acting as an anchor. He scored sixty-two runs and formed important alliances with Jamie Smith and Harry Brook to win it for England.
Joking with Nasser and Ian Ward on Sky Sports, Root said, “I guess I had to channel my inner Hussain.” He described how the going was difficult and the chase complex, and how he had to adjust his strategy in order to complete the task.

“This one was challenging today. We eventually succeeded, but it was a long, plodding process. The pitch itself clearly lost a lot of velocity throughout, and the outfield is the longest I’ve seen in England in a long time. Timing the ball was therefore really difficult, and I didn’t feel very comfortable attempting to muscle it. That seemed to put catchers in front of the bat earlier in the game, so they would need to accumulate in a slightly different manner, according to Root.
The former captain of England spoke candidly about the value of alliances. With Brook and Smith, he sewed together crucial partnerships of 49 and 64 runs, respectively, that edged England closer to victory.

That’s why partnerships are so wonderful. Someone like Jamie and Brookie, who both hit the ball hard and nicely, is bound to score goals without any hesitation. It’s fantastic to feed off each other since he’s a natural striker and is clearly in excellent form, added Root.
