Prior to the 2024 season of the lucrative Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), Jhulan Goswami was brought on as a consultant by the first WCPL winners, Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), to bolster their coaching team.
For the first time, the WCPL will take place this year prior to the Caribbean Premier League. Trinidad and Tobago will host the competition from August 21 to August 29. With her vast expertise as a player and coach in the sport, the famous Goswami is expected to bring a great deal of value to the TKR setup. In addition to serving as the bowling coach and mentor for the Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), she has coached the Bengal women’s side in Indian domestic cricket.
In an incredible career spanning two decades, Goswami claimed 355 wickets in a variety of formats prior to retirement in 2022. She has also played in T20Is on 68 occasions for India, thus she is no stranger to the game’s shortest format. Before the third WCPL tournament, the 41-year-old thanked Venky Mysore, CEO of Knight Riders Group, and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan for allowing her to join the Deandra Dottin-led team.
“Being a part of such a prestigious franchise is an honour. It is a joy to be joining TKR Women at the WCPL, as Knight Riders have achieved great success both in India and globally. I appreciate that the KKR management is considering me as a coach, and I’m excited about this competition,” Goswami was cited by myKhel.
The discussion on my potential joining TKR commenced with Mr. Venky Mysore. He is an excellent management head because of the manner he looks after everyone. When we met in Kolkata during the IPL, Shah Rukh Khan and Venky Sir both greeted and spoke to me, and I felt really honoured by it,” she continued.
At TKR, Goswami will be reunited with Shikha Pandey and Jemimah Rodrigues, his former teammates from India. To strengthen their lineup, the team has also signed Australian players Meg Lanning and Jess Jonassen.
“We are thrilled to have Jhulan Goswami as our team’s mentor. She is a true game legend for the TKR Women’s team. With five championship wins won by both the men’s and women’s teams over the past ten years, TKR is a very proud group,” Mysore commented on the development.
“We are confident that the team will excel under Jhulan’s guidance. The kids have a great chance to pick Jhulan’s brains and gain knowledge from her experiences to improve as cricket players. We hope to see her in the TKR setup soon and would like to wish her the best of luck,” he continued.
