'That's not in our hands' - Jemimah Rodrigues on the umpire's dead ball decision against New Zealand

The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 saw a slow start for the Indian women. The Women in Blue had a rough start to the competition as they lost badly against New Zealand Women in their opening match of the year.

During the game, there was a particularly contentious moment. On the last ball of the 14th over of the first innings, the incident took place. When Amelia Kerr of New Zealand tried to score a second run, Harmanpreet Kaur threw the ball well off.

The ball was sent back by Harmanpreet Kaur after it been judged dead, and Kerr was plainly run out in a time when she was summoned back by the umpires.

In relation to the occasion, Jemimah Rodrigues took the spotlight and shared her perspective.

“I wasn’t present when Deepti received the cap from the umpire. As Amelia Kerr demonstrated, the over was not called, even though New Zealand was very certain that it was a double run. Alright, we got that run out, we all thought. To be honest, we have no influence over that, and we honour the umpire’s ruling. “When Amelia Kerr herself left the game, knowing she was out, it’s a little harsh,” Rodrigues remarked during the news conference following the game.

It wasn’t the beginning we had anticipated: Harmanpreet Kaur

Following the incident, Harmanpreet Kaur of India was seen engaging in passionate conversation with the match officials, including Amol Mazumdar, the head coach of India. Harmanpreet Kaur was not prepared for the Indian women’s team to put up such a performance, as they were bowled out for just 102 runs while chasing a total of 161 runs.

“You can’t make these errors on such a high platform. We have frequently pursued 160–170. However, it was ten to fifteen runs too many on that pitch.

The way they started, I thought it would be 180 at one point. During the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet Kaur stated, “This wasn’t the start we were expecting.”
