Jemimah Rodrigues recalled talking to Richa Ghosh frequently in between overs while they shared the crease during the game. Alyssa Healy, the captain of Australia, called Jemimah “Mummy” in jest, urging Richa to listen to her. Richa replied elegantly a few moments later, hitting the boundary off the very next ball and retorting that “Mummy” had instructed her to go for the four.
A humorous sledging incident that occurred at the Wankhede Stadium in 2023 during a one-off Test match against Australia was recently recounted by Indian star batsman Jemimah Rodrigues. In the end, India defeated the team captained by Alyssa Healy by eight wickets.
“I was playing with Richard. I was talking to her all the time in between overs. “Hey, listen to your mother,” said Alyssa Healy, who was standing behind you. Richa then nails a square cut for four over the opening ball. “Mummy told me to hit a four,” she adds as she turns around, according to Jemimah’s account on Breakfast with Champions.
Richa contributed 52 runs and Jemimah scored 73 as the hosts amassed a massive 406 in the first innings of that game. Smriti and Deepti both scored half-centuries and made significant contributions.
The Mumbai native also revealed some of the nicknames used in the Indian team’s locker room, revealing that skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is affectionately referred to as “Thor Didi.”
“We have really straightforward nicknames. Jemu [herself], Richu [Richa Ghosh], and Deepu [Deepti Sharma]. Harman is Harmanpreet Thor, Thor didi. She is quite emotional off the pitch, despite her harsh behaviour on it. She’ll do everything for you,” she said.
Jemimah on the mood of the Indian team
During the same conversation, the 25-year-old talked about the team’s light-hearted moments of camaraderie and recalled a funny incident from their time together during the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.
“We host dinners to foster teamwork. I am important in that regard. I serve as the Chief Fun Officer, along with Harleen. We once conducted a treasure hunt in the hotel during the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. Amol Sir was the most enthusiastic about this. Ten days in advance, he will give me a call. He will then ask me whether I have any plans at breakfast the next day,” she continued.
Jemimah discusses her feelings on leading the Delhi Capitals in the WPL.
The Mumbai cricket player also discussed her ideas about leading the Delhi Capitals in the WPL. Prior to the 2026 WPL season, she was appointed captain of the Delhi Capitals. The star batter also talked about how the leadership position has allowed her to reach her full potential and how she enjoyed the extra responsibility.
“I’ve always enjoyed being in a leadership position. Since I was sixteen or seventeen, I have been in charge of Mumbai. And I’ve always thought that the extra responsibility that comes with being captain has brought out the best in me. I want to be the first to do anything as a leader before telling anyone else. I’m still anxious. never served as a franchise team’s leader. She uttered those words.
It would be intriguing to watch how the Delhi Capitals perform under a new full-time captain when they play the Mumbai Indians on January 10 at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai to kick off their WPL campaign.
