‘We are enjoying the fruits of what they have sown’ - Jemimah Rodrigues considers the growth of women's cricket in India

Superstar Jemimah Rodrigues, an Indian women’s batter, has expressed her happiness over the development of women’s cricket in her country. Regardless of whether it is the men’s or women’s team, Rodrigues claims that interest in Indian cricket has increased.

Notable contributors to the growth of women’s cricket include India’s steady results on the international stage and the introduction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Jemimah also acknowledged Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj for their contributions to women’s cricket. She believed that a big part of the public’s awareness of women’s cricket came from former cricket players.

“When we started playing cricket, Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj were the only two names I knew, at least personally. Since there were no games on television, to be honest, I had no idea how they looked. They accomplished it without acknowledgement or notoriety, and now we get to reap the rewards of their labours. Rodrigues said to Star Sports, “We came here because of them.

These days, everyone is aware of women’s cricket because to players like Smriti [Mandhana] and Harmanpreet [Kaur], who represent the next generation. The excitement for our games is one of the things that has changed over the past few years, the speaker continued.

That, I think is our main source of motivation: Jemimah Rodrigues

She also discussed how many times people have come to her with the view that the Indian national teams are the men’s and women’s teams. According to her, the main source of motivation for them has been witnessing the support from the public.

People are now saying, “We don’t care if it’s a men’s or women’s team; we just want to see the Indian team play.” Since we belong to this generation, I believe the main motivator for us is the excitement and josh (energy) that we experience, Rodrigues remarked.
