Mahela Jayawardene, the head coach of the Mumbai Indians, has discussed the team’s recent trade agreements in front of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) and the reasoning behind acquiring each one. Prior to the IPL 2026 mini auction, MI has brought in Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur, and Mayank Markande.
The ‘depth of experience’ that the Caribbean batter southpaw brought with him was discussed by the former Sri Lankan batsman. He continued by discussing Shardul, an all-rounder, and his local experience. The seasoned hitter concluded by highlighting the “warrior” presence of the leg-spinning Markande.
“You need a group of guys who can handle that pressure; they bring a wealth of experience.” Since Sherfane has been with us for many years, he brings a wealth of experience. Another player with a great deal of experience is Shardul. Being a native Mumbai lad and having played in Wankhede, he adds experience, which would be important. Mayank has fought hard. He was an outstanding member of a championship-winning squad while he was with us. We’ve been observing him for some time. In an official MI statement, Jayawardene stated, “As we go into the auction, we’ll know exactly which players we want to acquire.”
Jayawardene, who represented three teams during his six seasons in the IPL, then went on to underline MI’s core and how the management has made every effort to maintain consistency in the way they assemble their squad. Finally, he mentioned the priorities of the think tank.
“We built our team around a core group of players, and they are still there. Consistency is key.” They have a strong desire to succeed. If we include Rohit, Surya, Jasprit, Hardik, and Tilak in that pool. Bringing back Trent from the previous season’s auction, of course. In addition to an international captain like Mitch Santner and Jacksy (Will Jacks), we have players with a lot of international experience. I’ve always maintained that I just concentrate on the here and now and take things one game at a time. Staying in the here and now and building that value chain has always been our main goal’, he continued.
Arjun Tendulkar is one of the nine players that MI has released. For INR 30 lakh in 2025, the fast bowling all-rounder was traded to the Lucknow Super Giants. With INR 2.75 crore left in their purse, the five-time winners can take advantage of the five open places. Around December 16 of next month is when the small auction is most likely to take place.
