Reports: Jasprit Bumrah to be rested for England's ODIs ahead of Champions Trophy 2025

During the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25, India’s pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been the most impressive bowler. With 30 wickets from four Test matches at an average of 12.83, he is the top wicket-taker. His teammates bowlers have not been very supportive of the right-arm seamer. As India prepares for some significant duties in the upcoming months, his workload has been a cause for concern.

India will host England in a white-ball series back home following their fifth and final Test match against Australia in Sydney. From January 22 to February 12, the two titans of cricket will face off in three ODIs and five T20Is.

India Today reports that the top pacer, who is a 2024 ICC Cricketer of the Year nominee, will take a break before the Champions Trophy, which is eagerly awaited. He’ll probably miss both the ODI and T20I series. Given that India is now behind 1-2 in the series, Bumrah is anticipated to be crucial in the Sydney Test. They will maintain their prospects of winning the World Test Championship (WTC) and retaining the series if they win the fifth Test.

In an interview with the media following the team’s disastrous 184-run loss in Melbourne, India captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the dangers of overbowling Bumrah, particularly considering his heavy workload during the series.

“There is a chance of overbowling Jasprit Bumrah, so it is important to be honest.

There is no question that he has bowled a lot of overs. We do, however, take in mind the workloads of all the bowlers in every Test match we play. Again, though, when someone is playing that well, you want to make the most of it, and that’s what we’ve been doing with Bumrah,” Rohit stated.

“At some point, you have to take a step back and give him a little more breathing room. We have therefore used extreme caution. I have exercised extreme caution. I discussed with him his feelings and other things. I’m attempting to manage those things carefully on the pitch, he continued.

Bumrah would have participated in 10 red-ball matches in only four months with the Sydney Test. When the Champions Trophy kicks off on February 19, India will want the 31-year-old to be well and ready to play.
