Sunil Gavaskar, the 1983 World Cup champion and former great Test batsman, has chosen Jasprit Bumrah as the ideal team captain. Although the roster for India’s tour of England has not yet been revealed, there have been several rumours regarding the captain of the team for the five-match Test series. According to the sources, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill are two of the most likely candidates to captain the squad in red-ball cricket.
Given that both players are already regarded as the next big stars in Indian cricket, some past players have supported this move. Since Jasprit Bumrah would be the best person to know how many spells he can bowl in a Test match, the 75-year-old pundit clarified this in relation to limiting his workload with this move. Gavaskar says this is important because Jasprit Bumrah is currently the team’s top bowler.
“He is the best person to know how much work he has on his plate. Someone else would always expect more from Bumrah if you appointed them. He will understand that “yes, I need to take a break” if he is your top bowler. Jasprit Bumrah alone, in my opinion,” Gavaskar stated on Sports Today.
“I am aware of all the conjecture around his workload and other related matters. Give it to him so that he can determine how many overs he needs to bowl, when he should be removed, and when he should take a break. The former Indian legend went on to say, “That would be the best thing.”
The finest person to know when to bowl will be him: Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar added that Jasprit Bumrah will not have to miss a single game since he would have enough time to recuperate between some of the Test matches that would be played in England. Gavaskar said that he would be the greatest person to know when to bowl in those conditions, which further bolstered his case for being named Test captain.
It is possible that Jasprit Bumrah won’t have to miss a Test match.
He might be able to stop before his body begins to fail if you give it to him. Give it to him for me. There is an eight-day break following the initial test. You have enough time to get well. After that, there are two consecutive Test matches. It’s okay. Then there’s another void. “He will be the best person to know when to bowl if you give him the captaincy,” Gavaskar said.
