Jamie Smith hailed by cricket world after thrilling century at Edgbaston

Day three of the second Test match between India and England took place at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Friday, July 4, and featured top-tier counterattacking cricket from Jamie Smith and Harry Brook. The two right-handed hitters appeared to be competing for a three-figure score. Smith reached the milestone ahead of Brook, who had to deal with more deliveries.

Smith reached his century in just 80 balls. By sweeping Ravindra Jadeja for a boundary through the mid-wicket area in the 47th over, he reached the milestone. In Test matches, this ended up being England’s second-fastest century. In the final over of the morning session, when England collected 172 runs at an incredible run rate of 6.37, Smith scored his century.

Day 3 began with England at 77/3, 510 runs behind India’s first-inning total. For the Three Lions to have any chance of a comeback, overnight hitters Joe Root and Harry Brook had to step up and establish a solid connection. But with England reeling at 84/5, Mohammed Siraj removed Ben Stokes and Root off consecutive deliveries in the second over of the day.

Smith joined Brook as the Indian supporters were celebrating in the stands, and the two of them humiliated the England bowlers, particularly Prasidh Krishna. After being smashed for four fours and one six, Krishna let up 23 runs in an over.

With Smith batting at 102 and Brook adding 91 runs, England had reached 249/5 at the lunch break. Together, they have scored 165 runs from 154 balls. To escape the follow-on, England only need to score 139 more runs.

Meanwhile, Jamie Smith daring century on Day 3 in Birmingham has lit up X:
