Despite his steady play since his debut, young player Yashasvi Jaiswal was left out of the T20I lineup when Shubman Gill returned as vice-captain. Ajit Agarkar, the head of the All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee, made several calls for the 2025 Asia Cup that former cricket player Ravichandran Ashwin expressed surprise with.
Ashwin acknowledged that there are worries about Jaiswal’s exclusion, implying that the setback may make the left-handed opener reconsider his strategy. He claims that being passed over might force Jaiswal to play more for himself than the team, which would alter his innate attacking approach.
“Jaiswal seized the opportunity when it presented itself in Test cricket.
The most successful Test hitter to debut for India in recent history, without a doubt. In any format you gave him the chance to play, he was excellent, and what more is there to do than be excellent? On his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, “He performed exceptionally well and lost his chance in that slot.”
“He must now start over, but I sincerely hope he gets a chance nonetheless. The important thing is that Jaiswal was given a leadership role and didn’t lose any opportunities. There is now just one slot left, and that is Abhishek Sharma’s, where they must battle,” he continued.
The former off-spinner for India also emphasised Jaiswal’s remarkable strike rate in the shortest format, stressing that the opener always plays for the team and not for himself. Nevertheless, he had the disappointment of being left out of the T20I team in favour of Gill.
In this format as well, his strike rate is 165 [164.31]. Finding someone like Jaiswal is really challenging because he occasionally doesn’t play for himself. I have witnessed a lot of batters, including Shreyas, who don’t even play themselves. The ball is there to hit, and they will take that chance; they don’t play alone. It’s less for average players, but more so when it comes to goal scoring or strike rates. It took a while for players of this calibre to enter India, Ashwin remarked.
“What you’re saying is significant. “No, we must preserve our own space, and it is regrettable that T20 has turned into one of those venues,” he said in closing.
