"Jaise Chr ni hote" - Wasim Akram faces backlash after using a casteist slur on live television

During his analysis of his country’s defeat against Afghanistan in Match 22 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Monday, October 23 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has drawn criticism. Speaking on a Pakistani television channel, Akram criticized the team’s eating habits and overall level of fitness.

However, the renowned fast bowler accidentally used a casteist slur while unleashing a stinging attack on the Babar Azam-led team. Akram expressed his opinion on why he is opposed having a pre-match broadcast live from the stadium owing to the hot and muggy weather during the show “The Pavilion” on A Sports. Wasim Akram used the phrase “Ch***r” to describe how he would seem covered in perspiration under the sweltering sun.

The incident’s video has gone viral on social media, and Wasim Akram has taken criticism from followers all around the world for his choice of words.

Resuming the game, Afghanistan achieved 286/2 in 49 overs to chase down their highest World Cup goal ever and prevailed by eight wickets. Opening batsmen Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65 off 53) and Ibrahim Zadran (87 off 113) combined 130 runs for the first wicket off 127 balls to give their team a great start.

Rahmat Shah (77 off 84) and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (48 off 45) led their team home after being dismissed, assisting them in recording their third victory in the history of the ODI World Cup. Notably, it was also their first victory in the format over Pakistan.

Pakistan reached 282/7 on the strength of Babar Azam’s second fifty of the competition.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan scored 282/7 off their allotted 50 overs, with captain Babar Azam leading the way with an innings of 74 (92). Abdullah Shafique also reached the fifty-run mark with a score of 58 off 75. In order to help their team surpass the 280-run threshold, Iftikhar Ahmed (40 off 27) and Shadab Khan (40 off 38) both made significant contributions. Noor Ahmad, an Afghan bowler making her World Cup debut, was the team’s top performer with a spell of 3/49 in ten overs.
