On the first day of the second Test match between England and India at the Edgbaston in Birmingham, Ravindra Jadeja reached the crease, bringing India down to 211 for 5. Jadeja joined Shubman Gill, the captain of India, at the wicket. The pair played a risk-free style of cricket and stayed solid in the middle even if the team was having some problems. Jadeja left the field for 89 off 137 balls, edging closer by 11 runs to yet another hundred at the venue.
In the meantime, Jadeja’s display of batting skill delighted former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan.
He continued by saying that despite less-than-ideal circumstances, the Saurashtra native was able to get on top of the ball with the type of shots he played on an equitable pace and bounce of the wicket. In addition to the burden of having already lost half the team, Pathan was happy with his performance.
“His strokes from the back foot were challenging, particularly the fours he hit between mid-off and cover. If the ball bounces more or is a little faster, you could lose your wicket while making those shots. He was attempting to get on top of the ball, though. The ball was closer to his body when he got out, therefore he was unable to do it. But once he gained even a little width, he had no issues,” Pathan said on Sony Sports.
“He only had an outside edge yesterday (Day 1) when a four went between Gully and Slip, but Ravindra Jadeja needed the control he displayed and the knock he played nonetheless. His bowling on the fifth day has been discussed by a lot of people, including myself, and the player isn’t unaware of the criticism. “You played a fantastic knock, even though you and the team were under pressure,” the former all-rounder continued.
He will be attempting to perform admirably with the ball in addition to his work with the bat. It is anticipated that the surface would help the spinners, and with Jadeja’s expertise, he will likely be among the wickets to demonstrate his versatility. India will try to get ahead before batting for the second day, since England is now behind by 510 runs.
