I've learnt a lot about captaincy from Rohit Sharma, and I hope to apply lessons to my own leadership: Suryakumar Yadav

In the T20I series against Bangladesh, where they have begun the series with a victory in Gwalior, Suryakumar Yadav is now captaining the youthful Indian team. The series will be secured by Yadav and his players in the following game, which is scheduled for October 9 in Delhi.

Recently, the Mumbai hitter shared his thoughts on playing under Rohit Sharma and the captaincy strategies he picked up from his more experienced colleague. Yadav has spent years playing under captaincy for both the Mumbai Indians of the Indian Premier League and Team India.

India’s Suryakumar Yadav discussed his views on captaining his country in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) exclusively on JioCinema’s “Inside Out”: I’m having a lot of fun in my new role. I’ve found that leading has been easy thanks to our coach and my teammates, and I’m feeling great about my new role. I want to play the way I’ve always played and stay the same both on and off the field, while I don’t want being captain to change who I am.

“Players should be free to express themselves freely and play the way they naturally do while representing their teams and states, according to my ideology. The Indian Cricket Team’s uniform is the only thing that changes when you join, but your drive to succeed doesn’t. Not just the team captain on paper, but also the team leader I aspire to be. I aim to apply the knowledge I’ve gained from my prior captains and always attempt to learn from my superiors.

“Watching Rohit Sharma bat in the Kanpur Test felt like the T20 series had already started,” Yadav said in reflection of the lessons he has learned from Sharma.

It was the ideal strategy in the vein of Rohit Sharma. Winning the Kanpur Test was evidence of excellent leadership and captaincy, as not many teams can force a result after losing over two days of play. Rohit has taught me a lot about captaincy, and I intend to use that knowledge to improve my own leadership.

He also mentioned how well he got along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, saying, “Coach Gambhir and I share a special bond.” I will never forget that he has always shown faith in my talents. He can understand me even when I’m not speaking to him—it’s incredibly special—just by looking into my eyes or reading my body language.

Yadav went on to discuss the mindset he looks for in his teammates, saying, “I like it when batters contribute with the ball as well. Team cohesiveness is enhanced when players attempt to contribute by bowling an over or two and take on additional responsibilities. If a player has a poor day at bat but puts forth their best effort on the field, I think that kind of all-around effort may strengthen the team as a whole.

In addition, Yadav discussed India’s strategy for the Twenty20 World Cup, saying, “We want to continue playing the same brand of cricket we did during the recent World Cup.” We will succeed as long as we play that unselfish kind of cricket, in my opinion.

Thinking back on his famous grab in the T20 World Cup final: “Many people ask me what was going through my mind, but all I was thinking about at the time was catching the ball inside the ropes.” I’m incredibly happy that I was able to make that catch since it helped us win the T20 World Cup.

There was pressure at that very time, of course, but what transpired was the product of extensive practice making these kinds of catches.
