Is Champions Trophy harder than World Cup? Bavuma thinks so!

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma explains why the Champions Trophy's format is harder than the ODI World Cup.

Is Champions Trophy harder than World Cup? Bavuma thinks so!

Playing in the Pakistan ODI Tri-series will allow Rainbow Nation, also known as South Africa (SA), to start determining their team lineups and strategy for the ICC (International Cricket Council) major showdown Champions Trophy 2025. Interestingly, the tournament hosts have decided to play an ODI series at home in order to prepare for the major event, so cricket will once again experience the lost allure of the tri-series format.

Similar to how the first ODI ended with New Zealand (NZ) decisively defeating Pakistan, the Proteas are now playing the Kiwis in the second ODI. Starting on Monday, February 9, the game is being played at the famous Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, which is noteworthy. On the eve of the match, though, South African captain Temba Bavuma made the shocking claim that

The Champions Trophy is more difficult than the World Cup.

“You have time to assess the situation and take action during the World Cup. However, such is not possible in the Champions Trophy, but we hope to advance in the competition. “Obviously, we want to win the Champions Trophy this time, but when you look at the 50-over World Cup, the format makes it more difficult for teams,” Bavuma stated during the press conference, as reported by Sports Tak.

“It is a great chance for a couple of individuals who have been doing well in T20 competitions and domestic cricket to demonstrate their worth to the club. In addition, he said, “The tri-series will allow us to get used to playing in Pakistan and gain knowledge that we can impart to a larger audience. It also provides a chance for young players to continue playing in the future.”

We are in dire need of spun resources, therefore Maharaj and Shamsi will be of great assistance: Temba Bavuma

For the tri-nation ODI series, South Africa has selected a somewhat inexperienced team. This was mostly due to the fact that a number of elite players have been preoccupied with the SA20 2025. Unfazed, Temba Bavuma instead referred to it as a fantastic opportunity for the youth.

In addition, renowned pacer Anrich Nortje missed time because of yet another injury. In order to replace him for the Champions Trophy, bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch was given the opportunity. When considering the team, Temba Bavuma supported his team’s performance in both the tri-series and the main event. The significance of seasoned players like Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj was another topic he covered. In addition, on February 21, South Africa will play Afghanistan in Karachi to begin their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.

“Shamsi and Maharaj will be very helpful to us because we are currently lacking spin resources for the tri-series,” Bavuma said.
