On Day 1 of the current Headingley Test between England and India, well-known cricketer-turned-commentator Irfan Pathan was utterly amazed by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s batting. Irfan Pathan lavished Jaiswal with praise for his outstanding century while opening the batting. He was instrumental in putting India in a dominant position on the first day of the first Test by forming vital partnerships with KL Rahul (42) and Shubman Gill (127*).
In his post-match analysis, the former India all-rounder claimed that the opener’s front-foot strokes were like a statement and that his batting performance was absolutely amazing. The Baroda native went on to say that Yashasvi Jaiswal joy upon hitting the three-figure mark demonstrated how significant this victory was for the Uttar Pradesh native.
“Excellent hitting. By defending on the opening ball, he made a statement. Chris Woakes took his foot forward and defended the opening ball of the series. Pathan stated on Sony Sports Network that his strategy was to play balls both on and off the stumps with excellent control.
“This young Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggressive approach against bad balls was commendable, regardless of whether the ball was full or he had to play on the rise. The event demonstrates the significance of his childhood century on the England trip,” he continued.
With a pair of boundaries off the off-side first up, Yashasvi Jaiswal got the innings off to a good start.
Then, on a sluggish Headingley pitch, he took his time evaluating the swinging and partly cloudy conditions. The Southpaw, however, had no turning back once his feet were planted. He achieved his century off just 144 balls, including 16 boundaries and a six through the covers.
Yashasvi Jaiswal helped India create the ideal foundation with his 92-run partnership for the first wicket with fellow opener KL Rahul. Gill and Rishabh Pant, the captain and vice captain, then made full use of this foundation to help India score 359 runs against The Three Lions at Stumps on the first day, losing only three wickets.
