At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, April 23, the Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to record their fourth straight victory in the ongoing IPL 2025. The MI captain chose to field first after winning the toss, and he was successful in keeping SRH to a low total. Rohit Sharma’s outstanding batting performance helped MI secure their fifth victory of the competition.
Talking Points
1. MI’s outstanding bowling performance
In the powerplay, the MI bowlers put on an outstanding display, limiting SRH to just 24 runs and quickly destroying their top order. They put SRH on the defensive immediately after taking four wickets in the opening six overs. Trent Boult spearheaded the attack with a scorching session, taking four wickets at a remarkable economy rate of 6.50 in his four overs.
2. Klaasen’s counterattack fails
Heinrich Klaasen, the batsman and wicketkeeper for SRH, put up a valiant battle against MI’s strong bowling attack in the middle overs. With a tough 71 off 44 balls, he attempted to turn the tide in his team’s favour. Abhinav Manohar provided Klaasen with strong support, scoring a consistent 44 off 37 deliveries. They all worked together to help SRH bounce back and post a solid 143 overall.
3. Rohit Sharma took the lead in the pursuit.
After regaining his form against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the previous game, MI opener Rohit Sharma extended his incredible run with a commanding effort against SRH. He never seemed disturbed at the crease and played with assurance and authority, effortlessly establishing boundaries. With a fluid 70 off 46 balls, Rohit led the chase, while Suryakumar Yadav put the finishing touches on it with a blistering 40 off just 19 deliveries. MI ultimately won the match with ease, taking seven wickets in the process.
Who Said What?
Pat Cummins, Sunrisers Hyderabad (Losing Captain)
Abhinav and Klassy got us to a good total, but we couldn’t get through this innings. Needed a guy to really steady the ship. (On the pitch) You have to build your innings here, if you face a few balls you can catch up. (On the competition in the IPL) Difference between our first game where we got 280 odd and then on the same surface we got rolled over. In T20, the margins are also very little, you need to perform on the given day. (On the road ahead) We have a few away games now, it will be about assessing each wicket as quickly as possible. Some days it will be all out attack, some days it will be about weighing our options.
Hardik Pandya, MI (Winning Captain)
Good to have wins behind our back. Glad the boys are taking the momentum in the right way. Rohit, Deepak, Boult, SKY, everyone, always felt that once everyone started clicking, it’s going to be a complete combination, overall a wonderful win. Captaincy sometimes is about instincts, I like to see the game and react and not always rely on pre-made plans. (On bowling Puthur) At that point, we wanted them to take a chance and give us a wicket. Young guy, hadn’t played a couple of games, was tough for him and I understand. We can get better in all departments, we discussed about being very clinical and very smart. We’ll take it game by game. We’re very satisfied with this win.
Trent Boult, Player of the Match
Just nice to contribute to a good win. Good game for us. To restrict them to a decent score in their home conditions was wonderful. Just wanted to hit the wicket and make the batsmen play good shots, tried to keep it simple and put pressure on the batsmen. Good to see a couple of catches held today. I’d love to bowl four in a row and let it swing but that doesn’t always happen. Need to always be ready for whenever I’m called upon. Slightly different role for me this year. It’s a low percentage ball for me but as some older bowlers would say, nothing could beat a good yorker. I still love the feeling of competing and getting wickets. It’s a huge tournament, there are hundreds of thousands of bowlers who’d love to do what we’re doing so it’s about not taking it for granted.
