IPL 2025: Who Said What in Chennai Super Kings vs. Punjab Kings, Match 49?

In IPL 2025, the five-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost both at home and away to Punjab Kings (PBKS). PBKS moved up to the second position on the points table with this victory. CSK, meanwhile, lost for the eighth time this season and dropped to the bottom of the standings. Their expulsion from the IPL 2025 was also confirmed by this loss.

Talking Points

At Chepauk, the bowlers for PBKS strike the hosts early.

Early in the powerplay, PBKS pacers Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen removed CSK’s top-order batsmen for a pitiful number of runs. At the end of the powerplay, CSK was suffering at 48 for 3 as Shaik Rasheed (11 off 12), Ayush Mhatre (7 off 6), and Ravindra Jadeja (17 off 12) were unable to generate any momentum.

The inning deep is brewed by Curran-Brevis.

By keeping the scoreboard moving, Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis intelligently led the middle overs. With England batsman Sam Curran scoring 88 runs off just 47 deliveries and Brevis scoring 32 off 26 balls, the two formed a useful 78-run partnership.

Chennai doesn’t do well in the end.

By the fourteenth over, CSK was down just three wickets and seemed to be in a good position. They were bowled out for 190, though, after a collapse in the last six overs. Yuzvendra Chahal, the IPL’s all-time top wicket-taker, changed the course of the match for PBKS by taking four wickets, including an incredible hat-trick in the 19th over—his second in IPL history. During his four-over session, he concluded with outstanding figures of 4 for 32.

Madness of Prabhsimran-Shreyas batting

PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer teamed up with Prabhsimran Singh to steady the chase after Priyansh Arya was dismissed. With a vital 72-run partnership from just 50 balls, the two helped PBKS get closer to the finish line. Shreyas Iyer hammered 72 off 41 deliveries, while Prabhsimran played a fluid knock of 54 from 36 deliveries. Shashank Singh contributed as well, scoring a rapid 23 from 12. Despite taking two wickets apiece, Khaleel Ahmed and Matheesha Pathirana were unable to halt the PBKS hitters.

Who Said What?

MS Dhoni, CSK (Losing Captain)

I think the batting – Yes, it was the first time we put enough runs on the board. But was it a par score? I feel slightly short. Yes, a bit demanding from the batters but I feel we could’ve got slightly more. I feel we need to take our catches. The partnership between Brevis and Sam was excellent. We didn’t play the last four deliveries, and the second last over four batters got out. In close games, those 7 deliveries mean a lot. Well he’s a fighter (Curran). That’s something we all know.

Whenever he turns up he wants to contribute. Unfortunately so far, whenever we tried to give him a chance, the wicket was on the slower side and he found it slightly difficult. But today’s wicket was one of the best we’ve got at home in this tournament. That’s the reason I felt we needed another 15 runs. It’s the momentum in the middle order (Brevis offers). He’s also a very good fielder, he has power and he can hit good balls for boundaries. And he brings good energy. Happy with the way he’s playing. He can be an asset going ahead.

Shreyas Iyer, PBKS (Winning Captain & Player of the Match)

[On his form and knock] I love chasing on any field. I feel like I thrive whenever there is a big total on the board and you need to take the charge and momentum for the team for the rest of the batters to come and go full throttle. I don’t want to curse it [his away form] and just stay in the present and reacting to the ball. It doesn’t matter where I am playing. I just play with my approach. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t.

Lately I have been battin ga lot in the nets and facing the quick bowlers, especially with the new ball and that’s given me immense confidence. This is one part I have really worked on. And the attitude is something that I keep high whenever I approach the field. So I think all these small boxes have been ticked and that’s there to see. More than batting, the fielding was difficult since I was running from long-on to long-on. We had to maintain over rate and I had to think at the nick of time.

The humidity was more than any other field I’ve played on. [On the chase] We had a chat in between when Ricky came in and said we have to up the ante and not leave it to the end as they have great death bowlers. So the approach was to just take on the bowlers with the power hitters coming down the order and back ourselves. When I got in I said that I need to play a few balls to see how the wicket is playing. When I played ten balls then I started going. Prabh and Priyansh have been fabulous the way they have been playing. They have been smart, not just slogging.
