The value of the IPL media rights might reach $50 billion by 2043: Chairman Arun Dhumal

"If I have to see how it has gone over the last 15 years... we are expecting media rights (of the IPL) to go somewhere close to USD 50 billion by around 2043," Dhumal stated.

Arun Dhumal, the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has stated that he believes the league’s media rights value might reach an astounding USD 50 million in the next 20 years.

When the Indian Premier League (IPL) debuted in 2008, the cricket community quickly took notice. The league has had some strange low periods over the past 15 years, but the highs have unquestionably eclipsed them.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) inked an incredible five-year media contract for the IPL last year, for USD 6.2 billion (about Rs 48000 crore). It is noteworthy that the Indian Premier League (IPL) ranks second globally among the leagues with the highest perceived value, following the National Football League (NFL). The NFL and Disney reached an 11-year, USD 110 billion media contract that will begin in 2022.

Dhumal believes that if the IPL can keep attracting viewers with regular improvements that improve the product, its media rights value might rise significantly in the upcoming years. Additionally, he believed that the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles would only contribute to the sport’s continued growth.

“If I have to see how it has gone over the last 15 years and if I have to go by estimates going forward, we are expecting media rights (of the IPL) to go somewhere close to USD 50 billion by around 2043,” Dhumal was cited as saying by Business Insider.

“It is imperative that we continue to innovate, improve fan engagement, and raise game quality. I see a lot of hope and light at the end of the tunnel now that women’s cricket is included in the Olympics and the WPL is pushing the sport to new heights,” he continued.

IPL: Arun Dhumal deems it the greatest Made in India brand since independence

Since its start, the IPL’s media rights value has increased spectacularly. Over the past 15 years, the INR 6000 crore that it began with has grown enormously and eclipsed the value of television rights for several international leagues. The former BCCI treasurer spoke about the significance of the IPL and the reasons why it has resonated with cricket fans all over the world.

“The Indian Premier competition is the world’s most watched cricket competition. For me, the Indian Premier League is the greatest made-in-India brand that has emerged since independence. In terms of states, cultures, and languages spoken, our nation is extremely varied. But the IPL is one platform that is so deeply ingrained that it allows you to present India to the world,” Dhumal remarked.
