The young batsman-wicketkeeper for the Delhi Capitals is focused on making his India debut after a stellar IPL season. Abhishek Porel has amassed 225 runs at an average of 32.18 and a strike rate of 146.10 in the 2025 Indian Premier League. After struggling to convert his early-season starts, the 22-year-old was instrumental in his team’s resounding eight-wicket victory on April 22 at the Ekana Stadium against the Lucknow Super Giants, scoring 51 off 36.
Axar Patel and the Delhi Capitals have had an incredible season thus far, and the win allowed them to recover gracefully from a rare loss. Porel said that his “ultimate goal” is still to wear an India shirt, but for now, he is just focused on playing for the Capitals and winning a championship.
“Obviously, playing for India is the ultimate goal. But for now, my main goal is to help the Delhi Capitals win the championship by scoring runs for them.
After choosing to bowl first in their latest match against LSG, the Axar Patel-led Capitals put on a flawless display with the ball, limiting the opposition to 159/6 in 20 overs thanks to a four-wicket haul from bowler Mukesh Kumar. Later, they crossed the finish line in the 18th over thanks to KL Rahul’s undefeated 57 off 42 and Porel’s half-century.
In addition, captain Axar contributed with a rapid, undefeated 34 off 20 following Abhishek Porel ejection.
It was always my belief that we would find the target. Both the surface and our bowling, particularly in the middle overs, were playing brilliantly. I was therefore quite certain,” Porel remarked.
The left-hander continued, “I’m enjoying myself,” while discussing his role and his own batting this season. I’ve spoken with Kevin Pietersen and Hemang (Badani) sir. I simply attempt to practise it and use it during the game, regardless of the talks I have with them. It goes without saying that the support staff advises me to play freely. Everyone supports me, including the captain, coaches, and all of the senior players.
The 22-year-old gave pacer Mukesh Kumar high marks for his bowling as well. One person who supports his strength is Mukesh (Kumar). He is a really diligent individual. He practices a lot, particularly with his Yorkers.
With six victories and 12 points from eight games, the Delhi Capitals are now ranked second in the standings. On Sunday, April 27, they will play Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their upcoming IPL 2025 encounter at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
