With Punjab Kings (PBKS) hosting the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 54 of the current IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) at their other home venue, Dharamsala, the T20 cricket craze is in full swing. Interestingly, the altercation happened on Sunday, May 4.
This game marked the Kings’ debut appearance at this lovely location. PBKS put on a spectacular batting display after being asked to bat first, scoring an incredible 236 runs.
Talking Points
1. Shreyas maintains his strong form as Prabhsimran misses out on his century.
Prabhsimran Singh, the opener, stole the show with the bat, scoring 91 runs in just 48 balls. In his IPL career, this was his third fifty. He hammered 38 runs in the final 13 balls of his knock after an early vigil, launching his innings in the closing moments of the match.
Aside from him, captain Shreyas Iyer kept up his impressive batting performance. 18 sixes were among the 34 boundaries that PBKS scored overall. Punjab thus reached their eleventh 200-plus total in league history.
2. In the final overs, the Lucknow bowlers proved to be too costly.
Speaking of LSG’s bowling, its bowlers were unable to establish a rhythm. Avesh Khan was hammered for 26 runs in the 19th over, while fiery bowler Mayank Yadav scored 60 runs.
The top-order hitters for Lucknow were expected to get off to a similarly aggressive start. In the beginning of the run chase, though, they became lost. In the fifth over alone, pacer Arshdeep Singh struck three times, leaving LSG reeling at 27/3. His victims were Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram. Consequently, captain Rishabh Pant and Ayush Badoni went to work saving the day.
3. Omarzai gains more ground when Pant is dismissed with a flying bat.
But. Pant was about to push the innings deep when he was caught by Shashank Singh, and Afghan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai took his wicket. In the eighth over, Pant was out at 18 off 17 balls. Notably, Pant’s dismissal was a little strange since, in an effort to dominate Omarzai, he threw his bat towards the square leg as the ball was headed towards the fielder’s deep point area.
LSG’s run chase was further hampered when David Miller, who had attempted to make a start shortly after his departure, ended up slicing it too much to give Shashank another catch.
4. The 81-run partnership between Badoni and Samad
Ayush Badoni, who was hoping to improve on his performance early on, welcomed Vijaykumar Vyshak by smashing 21 runs off his first over in the 12th over of the Lucknow Super Giants’ innings, even though Lucknow was already in danger. Conversely, when the run rate continued to rise, Abdul Samad also started to score runs swiftly. In the following over, he hit Yuzvendra Chahal for two sixes, and he continued to attack until the fifteenth over.
5. In order to restore PBKS to the game, Arshadeep and Jansen stopped the run flow.
However, Arshdeep and Jansen performed well for Punjab because they appeared dangerous and might have decided the game. On the other hand, the former created pressure and kept the two quiet. As a result, Jansen fired Samad, who was on the verge of playing a blinder.
6. Chahal closes the chapter on Lucknow by ending Badoni’s flurry of knocks.
Yuzvendra Chahal ultimately came out to bowl the final over of the innings. The Dharamsala crowd was captivated by Badoni’s 74-run knock off 40 balls, even though Lucknow had already lost the match because they still needed around 50 runs. Despite an entertaining cameo from Avesh Khan, the Lucknow Super Giants ultimately fell by 37 runs.
Who Said What?
Shreyas Iyer, PBKS (Winning captain) said,
(On the performance) Elated, to be honest. Everyone stepped up at the right time, contribution was immense from everyone. The way he performed, it was exceptional and so pleasing to the eye. I am glad I did not know about it. Stepped onto the field to win the match and that was the mindset. Was not thinking about stats or what is a good score to defend. We have been lucky, but the luck has been because of the hard work. Each and every individual knows their roles precisely and the way they executed, it was top-notch. The only thing we need to correct is the awareness (in the field) and the way we move – that is the only box we have to tick off. Just back yourselves and your instincts – that has been working for us, not think too much about stats. The result…it does matter and that is winning.
Rishabh Pant, CSK (Losing captain) said,
(On the target) Definitely too many runs. When you drop crucial catches at the wrong time, it can hurt you badly. We thought it would do more, but we did not pick the length right at the start. But that is part and parcel of the game. The dream is still alive. If we can win the next three matches, we can definitely turn around and do amazing things. (On the batting order and if they are looking to change it) It makes sense when your top order is batting well. Every match, you cannot hope for them to come off. It is part of the game, we have to take it deep sometimes. We had too many runs to catch up on and that hurt us badly.
Prabhsimran Singh, Player of the Match said,
It was a very good innings because these two points were very vital for us. (On his shot selection) I was on 20-25 then, I got a chance and wanted to capitalize. In the start, could not read the wicket instantly, but when we did, felt we needed 200-plus. Whatever the situation will demand, we will try (and adapt). We are happy that we performed well and won.
