At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, LSG defeated the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 64 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Despite the defeat, LSG moved up to sixth place with 12 points, while GT maintained their lead with 18 points.
Talking Points
1. Marsh’s bat-related chaos
Mitchell Marsh, an all-rounder from Australia, took the GT bowlers to the stands from the very beginning and put on a fantastic display. Ten boundaries and eight sixes were among his 117 runs off just 64 balls. Nicholas Pooran, who was still undefeated at 56* off 27 balls, provided solid assistance for his innings, which helped LSG to a huge total.
2. GT’s top order is dented by LSG bowlers
Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, the GT openers, gave the game a fast start, but the LSG bowlers quickly shifted the balance of power in their favour. The GT captain was taken out early by the Kiwi pacer Will O’Rourke, and the GT captain was taken out by Avesh Khan. To castle Jos Buttler, Akash Singh made a magnificent slower in-swinging delivery.
3. The resistance of Shahrukh and Rutherford
With an 86-run stand off just 40 balls for the fourth wicket, Shahrukh Khan and Sherfane Rutherford showed a powerful comeback for GT. Rutherford scored 38 off 22 balls, while Shahrukh scored 57 off 29 balls in an aggressive display. The two were unable to approach the enormous objective in spite of their best attempts.
4. The visitors’ deal is sealed by bowlers.
The LSG bowlers consistently put pressure on the GT middle order, maintaining disciplined lines and lengths. They made sure GT never built momentum by taking wickets at regular intervals. Lucknow won the match by 33 runs, and Will O’Rourke was the best bowler in the second innings, returning with good numbers of 3/27.
Who Said What?
Shubman Gill, GT (Losing Captain)
We gave 15-20 extra. If we’d stopped them at 210-220 it would’ve been better, that was a huge difference. (Was bowling first just to test things out before the playoffs?) No, honestly. We bowled well in the powerplay, yes, we didn’t get wickets. But they scored 180 in the next 14 overs which was a lot. We were right in the game till the 17th over. Shahrukh and Rutherford batted well. Getting momentum back will be key in the next game.
Rishabh Pant, LSG (Winning Captain)
Happy. We talk about playing good cricket, we’ve shown on occasion we can do that. There were times in the tournament where we had our chances (but didn’t make it), but it’s part and parcel of the game. It was always a question of getting the top three today, but the way Shahrukh played show they have a good line-up. Coming into the tournament, there were injury concerns. We made sure it’s something we wouldn’t talk about. The whole batting unit has played, we lacked a bit on the fielding side. We can’t make excuses, just want to learn and move on.
Mitchell Marsh, Player of the Match
I actually first played for the Deccan Chargers, it’s been a long journey. Happy to contribute tonight. Being given the opportunity to open, the partnership with Markram has helped me. We haven’t had the best of seasons but the last two games are still important. I thought they bowled well early on. T20s these days, if you’re 12 off 12 and not time it well, it’s panic stations. But today showed you can bat through and go on to stitch big partnerships. It’s been disappointing, all teams come in to win it. The IPL is a beast of a competition, you got to be on every game. Any team can beat any team and that makes it the best tournament in the world.
