After an 18-year wait, Siddharth Mallya, the son of former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) owner and business magnate Vijay Mallya, broke down in tears when the team finally raised its first IPL (Indian Premier League) trophy. In the IPL 2025 season final, RCB’s thrilling six-run triumph over Punjab Kings set up tearful celebrations among players, spectators, and celebrities.
One of the most adored teams since the beginning of the lucrative league in 2008 is RCB. But even though they had great players like Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli, they were unable to win a championship. After defending 190 against PBKS on Tuesday, RCB was crowned the new champions, ending the title drought that had lasted for over 20 years.
Since the Mallyas were formerly tightly linked to the team, the win held personal significance for them.
The 38-year-old appeared tearful and distraught in a video that Siddharth Mallya posted on social media shortly after the victory.

His father, Vijay Mallya, who bought the Bengaluru team in 2008, also posted sincere messages on X, congratulating the team on finally breaking their curse. Mallya thought back on his early choices that helped to define RCB’s character.

When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru. I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years. I also had the honour of picking Chris Gayle the Universe Boss…

“It was my ambition when I started RCB that Bengaluru would host the IPL trophy. As a child, I had the honour of selecting the renowned King Kohli, and it is astounding that he has remained with the RCB for eighteen years. In a subsequent tweet, he added, “I also had the honour of selecting Mr. 360 AB DeVillers and Chris Gayle the Universe Boss, who continue to be an enduring part of RCB history.”
“The IPL trophy finally makes its way to Bengaluru. Once again, congratulations and many thanks to everyone who helped me realise my ambition. The IPL trophy should go to the best RCB supporters. “Ee Sala Cup baruthe Bengaluru!” Mallya said.
