When the LSG played the MI in Match 45 of the 2025 Indian Premier League on Sunday, April 27, at the Wankhede Stadium, Rishabh Pant was fined for maintaining a sluggish over-rate. Due to the recent infraction, which was the team’s second over-rate in the current Indian Premier League season, the LSG captain was fined INR 24 lakh.
The tournament’s Code of Conduct stipulates that the remaining members of the XI will be hit with “either INR 6 lakhs or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.” In addition to Rishabh Pant, the other leaders who have been punished for slow over-rate breaches in the 2025 Indian Premier League are Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Rajat Patidar, Riyan Parag, and Hardik Pandya.
In the end, LSG lost by a margin of 54 runs. They failed to locate the 216-run target that MI had established. In the end, the Rishabh Pant-led team was bowled out for 161 of their allotted 20 overs. During the afternoon match, the bowling attack failed to click. Not a single bowler from LSG was frugal. The only hitters to score 30 or more were Ayush Badoni (35 off 22) and Mitchell Marsh (34 off 24).
After as many games, the recent setback put LSG on 10 points. With four games remaining in the group stage, their net run-rate (NRR) is -0.325. LSG’s remaining games are all in the evening, with their respective matches against the Punjab Kings (May 4), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (May 9), Gujarat Titans (May 14), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (May 18).
Up until now, this season has been one to forget in terms of Rishabh Pant batting performance.
The wicketkeeper-batter has only managed to score 110 runs at a strike rate of 98.21 in nine innings thus far. LSG will be looking for much more from him in terms of batting responsibilities if they want his team to maintain their aspirations of making the playoffs.
