The Mumbai Indians (MI) maintained their composure to defeat Gujarat Titans (GT) by 20 runs on Friday at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, guaranteeing a berth in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings on Sunday, June 1.
After winning the toss, Mumbai Indians decided to bat first, and Rohit Sharma’s stunning fifty got them off to a strong start. With a brilliant 81 off 50 balls, Rohit was back to his best and put Mumbai Indians in control. Suryakumar Yadav (33), Tilak Varma (25), and Johny Bairstow (47) all contributed significantly to the total by providing significant runs. Mumbai Indians finished with a score of 228/5 after smashing nine sixes in their last six overs, including three from Hardik Pandya in the last over.
The Gujarat Titans got off to a great start while chasing a hefty objective. Following the loss of captain Shubman Gill in the opening over, Kusal Mendis and B Sai Sudharsan put up a partnership of 64 runs. On his debut, Mendis was unlucky to get dismissed after being hit-wicket at 20. Nevertheless, Sudharsan had a strong hand, scoring a fifty off 28 balls and finishing with 80 off 49 balls to reach 700 runs for the season.
Through the middle overs, Washington Sundar helped Gujarat Titans maintain the necessary pace by adding 48 off 24 balls. However, Mumbai Indians used their best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, to clean up Washington Sundar with his signature yorker in the last moments of the second innings.
Ashwani Kumar, an impact player for Mumbai Indians, caused problems for the Gujarat Titans hitters with his lengths. Power hitters Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan at the crease kept Gujarat Titans chances alive despite their need for 45 runs from the final three overs. But even though Shahrukh hit a huge six in his 19th over, Trent Boult managed just 12 runs.
24 runs must be scored off the last six balls. Despite having a hamstring issue, Richard Gleeson bowled the last over and sealed the victory with three spectacular deliveries, giving up just three runs before Ashwani concluded the innings.
