After defeating the Delhi Capitals (DC) by a commanding 59 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, May 21, the five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI) formally guaranteed their place in the IPL 2025 Playoffs. MI joined Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the competition for the coveted trophy after being the fourth and last team to go through the league stage.
MI amassed a respectable 180 runs in the first innings thanks to Suryakumar Yadav’s outstanding 73* off 43 balls. To create a solid total, the remaining members of the MI batting lineup each made respectable contributions. In his four-over performance, DC’s Mukesh Kumar took two wickets but gave up 48 runs.
DC had trouble in the chase right from the beginning as MI bowlers continued to hit at regular intervals. A glimmer of hope was raised by Sameer Rizvi’s 39-run knock, but Mitchell Santner’s magical ball-control spell put an end to it.
Mitchell Santner spearheaded MI’s bowling assault with a stellar performance in which he claimed three wickets for just eleven runs in his four overs. In 3.2 overs, Jasprit Bumrah also took three wickets for a meagre 12 runs. Following the defeat, DC was formally eliminated from the competition.
