IPL 2025: Following the league’s suspension, international cricket boards voice worries over player safety

IPL 2025 is expected to continue next week after the BCCI meeting on May 11

The growing tension between India and Pakistan has led to a one-week suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. In response, Cricket Australia (CA) and the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) have voiced worries about the security of their players who were playing in the league.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to immediately suspend the competition for a week after the high-stakes match between the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings had to be stopped midway through the first innings on Thursday, May 8.

Arun Dhumal, the chairman of the Indian Premier League, stated that there was no need to keep the league going and that a decision regarding its future will be made in the days ahead when conditions were evaluated.

“Players’ safety and well-being cannot be compromised. We keep all of the South African players at the IPL informed about security updates and maintain direct communication with them. According to Cricbuzz, SACA CEO Andrew Breetzke stated, “We have offered them any support they need.”

“We continue to closely monitor the situation in Pakistan and India, including obtaining regular advice and updates from the Australian Government, the PCB, BCCI, and local government authorities, and maintaining communication with our players and support staff currently in the region,” Cricket Australia said in a statement on Friday.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) also released a statement a few hours before to the aforementioned escalation, claiming that it was in contact with the PCB and BCCI to assess the situation.

With just 12 league games left before the playoffs and championship game, the IPL is in an intriguingly precarious position.

None of the clubs have secured a spot in the playoffs, despite the Gujarat Titans holding the top spot in the IPL 2025 points standings. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings have already been eliminated from the 10-team tournament’s race to the next round.
