After losing to SRH on Monday night, the LSG were eliminated, leaving just two teams remaining in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoff race.
Three of the four playoff positions have already been secured by Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS). The Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) are vying for the remaining ticket. On May 21, both will square off in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
With Monday’s outcome, LSG became the fifth club eliminated from the playoff race, joining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and SRH on the sidelines. Given that Mumbai Indians and DC are now fighting for the last slot, who advances could be determined by their match on Wednesday.
With 14 points from 12 games and a positive net run rate (NRR) of 1.156, Mumbai Indians is now in fourth place. However, with 13 points and an NRR of 0.260, DC is in fifth place. The five-time champions have a little qualification edge as a result. Mumbai will reach 16 points and guarantee their postseason berth with one game remaining if they defeat Delhi. The best they could score at that moment would be 15 points, which would eliminate the Axar Patel-led team.
On the other hand, MI stays at 14 points if the Capitals win, moving them to 15 points. After that, it comes down to their individual final matches against PBKS. DC needs to defeat MI and then defeat the Shreyas Iyer-led team again in order to qualify. Regardless of their outcome against Punjab, they would reach 17 points and eliminate MI. However, MI can still qualify for the playoffs by defeating PBKS and earning 16 points if DC defeats MI and then loses to PBKS. Notably, MI’s campaign is over if they lose the final two games.
