Back-to-back losses have compounded the mounting criticism from both fans and analysts regarding Hardik Pandya’s dismal start to his Mumbai Indians captaincy. But a recent incident involving legendary bowler Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka, who is currently MI’s bowling coach, during a post-match conversation following MI’s loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), has angered MI supporters even more.
Fans have been dissatisfied with the choice ever after Pandya rejoined the MI team and was named captain. The fact that the player was jeered during MI’s inaugural match against Gujarat Titans (GT) was rather obvious.
Both academics and former cricket players have criticised Pandya for his on-field choices and performances. Things have gotten worse due to MI’s dismal start under Pandya’s captaincy, which included losses in their opening two games against GT and SRH, respectively.

Ignoring Lasith Malinga and Hardik Pandya
Following their loss to SRH, videos of Pandya pushing Malinga away have been making the rounds on social media. Malinga was trying to give him an embrace. Pandya may be seen avoiding Malinga’s embrace in favour of handshakes with the opposing players.

An earlier video showed Malinga giving up his spot in the dugout as Pandya got ready to pad up, even though assistant coach Kieron Pollard had first moved to clear a path. It irritated the fans that the captain did not prevent the veteran pro from resigning.

This event intensifies the controversy surrounding Pandya’s questionable selection as MI skipper. The opposition scored the highest-ever IPL total of 277 for 3, making the loss to SRH itself a record-breaking event. Mumbai Indians suffered their second straight loss in the tournament, losing by 31 runs in spite of a strong chase effort. Due of his dismal bat and ball form, Pandya’s captaincy is coming under more scrutiny.
