The Chennai Super Kings had just defeated SRH in their most recent game as they arrived at the game. Shardul Thakur returned to the team and Richard Gleeson made his IPL debut; however, Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande were forced to miss out owing to niggles.

After winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, Sam Curran returned to Chennai to play his old team. The visiting side that had defeated KKR in the epic run-chase was the same one that had chased down a whopping 261 in the previous game.

When put to bat, Chennai Super Kings started slowly in the opening few overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad continued to impress with the bat, scoring a few lovely boundaries to captivate the audience.
