Rita Saffioti, the minister of tourism for Western Australia, announced plans to submit a bid to host an Indian Premier League (IPL) friendly game at Optus Stadium in Perth. This program is a part of a larger plan to increase the number of tourists in the area, especially from India.
The news is made in conjunction with the debut of a brand-new travel advertising campaign that features Australian cricket icon Adam Gilchrist and his son Harry. The ad, which will make its premiere on August 19 in Mumbai and Delhi, portrays Perth and its environs as popular travel destinations for Indian visitors.
The prospective financial advantages of hosting an Indian Premier League match were stressed by Minister Saffioti.
The Gilchrist-led campaign showcases a number of Perth-area attractions, such as wine tasting in Swan Valley, dolphin watching in Rockingham, stargazing in the Pinnacles, four-wheel driving and sandboarding in Lancelin. Social media platforms will be used to advertise these encounters.
India has emerged as Western Australia’s top tourism destination, with 34,000 tourists expected to spend USD 128 million there by March 2024, boosting the region’s GDP.
Since 2019, India’s tourism industry has risen from the state’s 11th to 7th largest, primarily due to the 9,600 international students studying in Washington and the state’s expanding Indian community, which numbers about 61,000 people.
The success of the global “Drive the Dream” campaign, which featured Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo touring Australia’s Coral Coast, is being built upon by this new project. The state’s well-known “Walking On A Dream” tourism brand is consistent with both campaigns.

With record visitor spending of USD 17.9 billion in the year ending in March 2024, Western Australia (WA) exceeded all other states in terms of overall visitor expenditure when compared to 2019. These figures are based on data from Tourism Australia.
