India Women shown their skill in a thrilling game of cricket, with a respectable total of 116/7.
But the playing surface was anything but conducive to chasing, with perilous curves presenting a stiff obstacle for the opposition. The explosive Shafali Verma’s departure caused India Women, who chose to bat first, to suffer an early blow. However, a strong partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues gave the innings new life and helped to add 73 runs to the score.
Mandhana and Jemimah, regrettably, were unable to reach their respective half-centuries, and the Sri Lankan bowlers were able to rally by grabbing wickets in the last overs to reclaim the lead. Sri Lanka, boosted by their outstanding fielding performance, excelled on the pitch. With two outstanding catches and a sensational run-out on the last delivery of the innings, the wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani proved her mettle. The Indian spinners jumped at the chance to take advantage of these bowler-friendly circumstances because the wicket was designed for spin.
Immediately after the chase began, Sri Lanka made a quick start, scoring 12 runs in the opening over thanks to a booming six hit by Chamari Athapaththu off the imposing Deepti Sharma. Titas Sadhu, who took three key wickets for India and rattled the Sri Lankan batting order, stood out as the team’s best bowler, nevertheless. Her spell was mesmerising, with stats like 4-1-6-2, and it suffocated the Lankan batters, leaving them 19 runs short of the mark. India showed their grit in these difficult circumstances, winning the Gold Medal match of the Asian Games 2023 despite the ground not being the best for batting.
The unstoppable Harmanpreet Kaur, who had been out for two matches due to an emotional exchange she had with match officials during a previous series against Bangladesh, was back in action, which strengthened India’s chances of winning even more. After easily advancing past one-sided semifinal matches, both clubs entered the game with unrelenting determination. However, in a thrilling final, India won the coveted Gold medal.
