After India wins the Twenty20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma's mother posts on Instagram

Cricket fans have taken notice of a gesture made by Rohit Sharma’s mother, Purnima Sharma, following India’s historic victory against South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Barbados. Her Instagram post, which showed a picture of the trophy with Rohit and Virat Kohli, not only went viral but also emphasised the close relationship these two cricketing greats have.

After ten years, the Indian cricket team’s trophy drought came to an end with their triumph in the main event. With the simultaneous announcement of both Sharma and Kohli’s retirement from T20 international cricket, this historic victory marked the end of an era in their remarkable careers in the format.

The Instagram image from the mother of the Indian captain showed an edited picture of Rohit standing next to Kohli, his daughter Samaira on his shoulders. “Daughter on his shoulders, nation on his back, brother by his side,” the caption said, implying that Kohli is Rohit’s family member. This article gained over 36,000 likes in a short period of time and travelled swiftly across other social media networks.

India wins their second World T20 Championship.

With the subtitle “goat duo in T20 cricket,” the picture highlighted the two contemporary greats’ close friendship in addition to celebrating India’s win. Long-running rumours of a tense relationship between the two cricket players were powerfully refuted by this post.

In India’s World Cup campaign, Rohit and Kohli were both essential players. Rohit finished as the second-highest scorer of the tournament, and Kohli, who had been quiet in the run-up to the final, scored a vital 76 runs in the match against South Africa.

The competition itself was a suspenseful experience. India amassed a challenging total of 176/7 after being reduced to 34/3, largely because to the vital efforts of Axar Patel and Shivam Dube, along with 76 from Kohli. Proteas, in reply, achieved 169/8, but Heinrich Klaasen’s fast-bowling 52 kept them in contention. Nonetheless, India’s triumph was assured by superb death bowling from Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya.
