India’s slow over-rate versus Australia in their ICC Women’s World Cup league encounter at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, October 12, has resulted in a five percent match fee penalties.
When time allowances were taken into account, it was determined that India was one over short of the goal, hence Michell Periera of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees assessed the sentence.
Players are fined 5% of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl in the designated time, as per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences.
No formal hearing was required because India captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted to the crime and agreed to the suggested punishment. The charge was levelled by third umpire Kim Cotton, fourth umpire Jacquline Williams, and on-field umpires Sue Redfern and Nimali Perera.
Regarding the match, India suffered their second straight loss in the competition after losing to South Africa by the same score at the same location on October 9 and falling to Australia by three wickets in a well-fought, high-scoring contest.
With openers Smriti Mandhana (80 off 66) and Pratika Rawal (75 off 96) scoring half-centuries, India amassed a commanding 330 runs in 48.5 overs after being put in to bat. Harleen Deol (38 off 42), Jemimah Rodirgues (33 off 21), and Richa Ghosh (32 off 22) also made minor but helpful contributions. While Sophie Molineux responded with stats of 3 for 75 in 10 overs, Annabel Sutherland was the dominant wrecker, taking five wickets for a mere 40 runs.
Australia had captain Alyssa Healy to thank for charging back to form with a match-defining 142-run knock in just 107 deliveries, including 21 fours and three sixes, as they chased a formidable mark. Australia hammered down the record total with three wickets and an over remaining, helped by forties from Phoebe Litchfield (40 off 39), Ellyse Perry (47 off 52), and Ashleigh Gardner (45 off 46).
