On Day 2 of the second Test match between Team India and South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town, the Indians won by a remarkable seven wickets. With just 107 overs needed to finish, the match, which saw 23 wickets fall on the first day, was packed with action and went down as the shortest Test in history.
India has jumped up to the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings for the 2023–25 cycle thanks to their victory. With 26 points from four matches, or a 54.16% point percentage, they are currently ranked first.
Notably, the team captained by Rohit Sharma dropped to sixth place following the first Test match loss in Centurion, and they were also penalized two WTC points for sluggish overrate. In contrast, South Africa led the group with a point percentage of 100%. With one victory and one defeat from two matches and a 50% point percentage, the Proteas are now ranked second; however, that changed after the second Test loss.
Rewinding to the game, South Africa resumed their innings on Day 2 at 62/3 after an overnight score of 36 runs behind India, with Aiden Markram (36*) and David Bedingham (7*) at the wicket. Jasprit Bumrah (6/61) made his debut in the first over of play, dismissing Bedingham for 11. To clinch his tenth five-wicket haul of his Test career, he also removed Kyle Verreynne (9 off 7), Marco Jansen (11 off 9), and Keshav Maharaj (3 off 4).
In Cape Town, Jasprit Bumrah made his second consecutive fifer record.
Aiden Markram changed gears and scored his seventh Test century in just 99 balls after seeing wickets fall at the other end. With the help of his 106 (103)-run innings, South Africa scored 176 runs in the second half, giving India 79 runs to win.
Yashasvi Jaiswal top scored with 28 (23), helping the Rohit Sharma-led team chase down the mark in just 12 overs. India went on to win the match by seven wickets, leveling the series at one. They also made history by being the first Asian side to win a Test match in Cape Town.
