Report: Should India decide not to go to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy in 2025, the ICC has a backup plan in place

The 2019 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9. The competition was last held in 2017, seven years ago, and Pakistan is the reigning champion. In order to have just one major tournament for each format, the ICC decided in 2016 to cancel the tournament’s subsequent editions after 2017. However, in 2021, they changed their minds and said that the competition will resume in 2025.

Given the political and diplomatic ties between the two nations, Pakistan’s selection as the tournament’s hosts raises serious concerns about India’s participation.

The ICC is said to have approved a budget of about 65 million dollars during its most recent AGM in Colombo, to cover all the bases in the event that India declines to visit Pakistan. The funding, according to, covers the costs of holding matches outside of Pakistan.

The report states that the approval notes from the Chief Executives Committee (CEC) state that “PCB has signed the Host Agreement and collaborated with management to draft an event budget, which is submitted to F&CA for approval.” If some matches must be played outside of Pakistan, the management has also accepted an estimate of the rise in event staging costs.”

“In March 2024, Pakistan had a planning meeting and an assessment of the suggested match locations. The statement went on to say, “In all three locations, a substantial amount of remodelling work is ongoing to modernise facilities.

India’s matches are scheduled to take place in Lahore, where they will also play their hosts, Pakistan, according to rumours that the draft schedule has been established. They will be assigned to Group A, along with Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand. India’s match against Pakistan is scheduled for March 1, per the draft schedule. On February 20 and February 23, respectively, they will play Bangladesh and New Zealand.
